Police intervention in Bau dispute raises eyebrows

From , 4:04 am on 12 June 2018

A chief from the Fijian island of Bau, Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, has been released from custody amid a dispute over his installation as paramount chief.

The police and armed soldiers arrived on Bau early on Friday to head off a formal ceremony to install Ratu Epenisa in the paramount role of Vunivalu of Bau.

The Native Land Commission instructed the police to stop the ceremony because of disagreement over who should take the title.

A scholar of Fijian language and culture Paul Geraghty told Sally Round it's unusual for the police to get involved in such chiefly matters.
