Coalition negotiations continue in the Cooks

From , 3:03 pm on 22 June 2018

Political parties in the Cook Islands have been busy negotiating behind closed doors to try and form a coalition with final elections results still a week away.

Neither the Democratic Party or the Cook Islands Party secured a clear majority in the 24 seat parliament when voters went to the polls last week.

Preliminary results show the Democrats have 11 seats, the CIP has 10, two seats went to independents, and one seat to the One Cook Islands Party.

Our correspondent in Rarotonga, Florence Syme-Buchanan, told Sara Vui-Talitu that each party needs to keep its unity and support despite some surprise losses and low voter turnout.
