Forum delegates squabble in Nauru over diplomatic recognition

From , 5:03 am on 5 September 2018

Reports from Nauru say there has been concern by some delegates to the Pacific Islands Forum summit about the way China's visiting diplomats were treated.

Beijing's delegates to the Forum Dialogue meeting unsuccessfully applied for visas to Nauru using diplomatic passports.

But Nauru's president Baron Waqa says there is a reciprocal arrangement with China which calls for ordinary passports to be used.

Nauru, however, has diplomatic links with Taiwan.

Nic Maclellan of Islands Business told Don Wiseman what happened when the Forum Dialogue got underway on Tuesday.
