CNMI birth tourism spotlighted after woman's arrest

From , 4:04 pm on 9 October 2018

The arrest of a woman from China in the Northern Marianas has again put the the spotlight on birth tourism in the US territory.

The woman entered as a tourist in 2015, but the police say her real intention was to give the child she was pregnant with US citizenship.

The Northern Marianas and the rest of the US have long dealt with the problem of birth tourism where late-term pregnant women travel so their babies can get American passports.

Our correspondent in the CNMI Mark Rabago told Sally Round it's not a crime for tourists to give birth in the territory as long as they are honest about their intentions.
