Human rights abuses in Papua ongoing, churches say

The World Council of Churches says human rights abuses in Indonesian-ruled Papua are consistent and ongoing.

A team from the global Christian grouping was permitted to visit several locations in Papua province last week.

The Council's Director, International Affairs, Peter Prove, was one of the multi-national 25-person delegation.

He says anecdotal accounts received during the visit are substantiated by extensive data that the Council has access to on reports of human rights violations.

Mr Prove told Johnny Blades the starting point for addressing the abuses has to be increased access to the remote territory.
