No-one was better equipped to lead Fiji into independence, and at the age of 50, Ratu Mara accepted the task as an inescapable chiefly duty. The last of his leadership roles in Fiji politics was as President of the Republic from 1993 to 2000. He was interviewed by Ian Johnstone in 1995.
