Released at 1:23 pm on 2 October 2012

Radio New Zealand’s international reputation as a quality public service broadcaster has been boosted with the announcement of the finalists for the 2012 Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Media Excellence Awards in London.

Radio New Zealand’s status has been reinforced by the announcement that Saturday Morning presenter, Kim Hill, and documentary maker, Simon Morton, are finalists in their respective radio categories.

Commenting on the announcement, Radio New Zealand CEO, Peter Cavanagh, acknowledged the importance of the awards:

“The AIB Media Excellence Awards set the bench mark for international broadcasting standards and Radio New Zealand is justifiably proud to take its place among the very best broadcasters in the world. We are a small public broadcaster competing successfully against respected and highly resourced organisations like the BBC, ABC, and Deutsche Welle ”

Kim Hill is one of just two finalists for International Radio Personality of the Year and Simon Morton’s  Broken River documentary  is one of seven finalists  in the Best Current Affairs Documentary category.

Kim Hill is also a finalist in the Air Personality category of the 2012 Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union ( ABU) awards and Radio New Zealand News is a finalist in the News category of the same awards.

Earlier this year Broken River, a finalist in the New Zealand Radio Awards, won a gold medal in the prestigious New York Festival Radio Awards.  The documentary takes the audience through an emotional as well as a geographical journey through the heart of Christchurch city in a time of upheaval.

The AIB Media Excellence Award winners are announced in London on November 7th
