Radio New Zealand CEO to Depart in July

Released at 3:27 pm on 5 July 2013

The Board of Radio New Zealand and incumbent Chief Executive and Editor in Chief, Peter Cavanagh, have reached a mutual agreement that will result in Peter Cavanagh terminating his contract with Radio New Zealand on Friday 12th July.

CEO designate, Paul Thompson, is available to take up his new role with Radio New Zealand on September 9th – three months earlier than originally anticipated. Peter Cavanagh’s contract was scheduled to expire in December.

The Board has chosen to make an earlier appointment and, by mutual agreement, Peter Cavanagh will step aside during the transition and hand over the management of the public broadcaster to Deputy Chief Executive, Ken Law, until Paul Thompson takes up his position.

Peter Cavanagh will be available for consultation and to assist the Board and incoming CEO during the transition period. He will also assist Radio New Zealand in concluding litigation in a long-standing employment dispute.

The Chairman of the Radio New Zealand Board, Richard Griffin, says Peter Cavanagh leaves Radio New Zealand with the full support and best wishes of the Board of Governors.

“Peter has steered the company with extraordinary success over the decade of his stewardship and he leaves the organisation in good heart and celebrating the most successful results in its history.”
