The origins and meanings of the art is a mystery, but the cultural significance is magnificent.
Southern story-teller Sage Forest visits the cave of the Opihi taniwha with curator Amanda Symon from Te Ana Ngai Tahu Maori Rock Art centre in Timaru. The South Island Maori Rock Art Project (SIMRAP) has documented 580 sites in the South Island, over 90% on private land.
The Ngai Tahu Maori Rock Art Trust are active in the protection of these sites, and education is a big key to achieving this.
