In the past, the Alpine Fault has produced large earthquakes every 200 to 400 years - and the last one of these is thought to have happened in 1717. To find out what's going on deep underground, an international team of geologists is preparing to drill 1.5 kilometres deep, straight into the fault zone.
Veronika Meduna meets one of the project leaders, GNS Science geologist Rupert Sutherland, and David Prior at the University of Otago, who studies rocks that have been uplifted from the fault to get a better idea of earthquake processes.
