We were scared of them long before Steven Spielberg's film Jaws, but that cemented their reputation because it showed us just how big they can be, more than six metres long and up to two and a half thousand kilos.
So when a video hit the internet a few days ago of a woman swimming alongside and riding a great white shark - you can watch it on our Facebook page - people questioned her sanity.
But Honolulu-based shark conservationist and diver, Ocean Ramsey, the woman featured in the clip, says she wants to show a different side of the great white shark.

Grant manned the lighthouse at Castlepoint from from 1972 to 1988, when it became automated. He's since moved to Sydney, but has been back in New Zealand to celebrate the 100-hundred year centenary of the Castlepoint lighthouse, which was held over the weekend.
