2:10  SS Ventnor - Wong  Liu Sheung - One of the most unusual maritime tragedies in New Zealand is being remembered, thanks to a new art exhibition in the Far North.The steamship Ventnor was on its way from Wellington to Hong Kong when it sank off the west coat of Northland in 1902.

The loss of the Ventnor claimed the lives of most of her crew, and consigned to the ocean, not only  5000 tonnes of coal, but also 499 coffins carrying the remains of Chinese goldminers who were being taken home for burial.

Many of the coffins were washed up along the west coast, where they were found and buried by local iwi.

But their loss remained a tragedy for their families in China, owing to the belief that a soul cannot rest unless the grave of a loved one is tended by family members.

The story passed into local legend, and was all but forgotten until a 2007 documentary about the sinking made by Rawene local Wong  Liu Sheung Wong.

And Loo Shong's documentary has led on to an art exhibition dedicated to the story of the Ventnor, which opened on the weekend in Kohukohu

Back to April 1968 now and this BBC Witness story about a concert by the soul singer James Brown held just 24 hours after the assassination of the black civil rights leader Martin Luther King. The concert started amid rioting and violence provoked by the killing. But despite the fears of the city authorities, the streets of Boston were quiet the night James Brown and his band played. Mike Lanchin talks with two people who were at the Boston Gardens Concert.

3:10 Type 2 Diabetes - Professor Merlin Thomas - Every day in New Zealand, 50 people are diagnosed with diabetes. New Zealand has one of the highest diabetes rates in the OECD.
We know this, we talk about the epidemic regularly  on the Panel Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of cases and it's the one we are going to focus on today. It's treatable and even preventable. Professor Merlin Thomas is a clinician scientist and Otago University graduate at the Baker I-D-I Heart and Diabetes Institute in Australia.
He's considered one of the worlds leading experts on Diabetes and he has just written a book called Understanding Type 2 Diabetes.
