In 1855, he was caught stealing a thousand sheep from a station north of Timaru. He escaped walking 160 milies to Lyttleton where he was caught by police, convicted and then pardoned.
Catriona Baker is a soon to be 96 year old  retired Mackenzie Country run-holder.
Her father wrote one of the first books about  James Mackenzie. With the help of Linda Sundberg, Catriona has put together  her own  book called The Story of James Mackenzie of the Mackenzie Country New Zealand.
