2:10 Cannock Chase - Delores Ho - In June 1917. the soldiers of the Otago Regiment of the New Zealand Rifle brigade helped secure a hard fought victory at Messines in Belgium. Many of us know about this famous World War One battle. But what few knew, is what the surviving troops did when they returned to England, to Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. They recreated the battle field complete with trenches buildings, roads and even windmills on a smaller scale in an area the size of a football field near their training base.
Six years ago, a Weimeraner dog named Parker rediscovered a section of a concrete terrain on the field.
Since then, The Chase Project has been excavating the site. The model built by New Zealand troops is now almost fully exposed.
Delores Ho is the archivist at the National Army Museum and she's been helping the Chase Project with research and has visited the site herself.
2:20 Free Climbing Record - Mayan Smith-Gobat - A New Zealand woman has set a new speed record for free climbing the world famous 2307metre granite Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in California.
She and her climbing partner raced up the steep granite monolith is just 5 hours and 39 minutes... shaving nearly 2 hours off her old record. The only rope she uses is there for safety, to prevent a fall but she doesn't use it to climb at all. Now she has two other records in her sights, including plans to become the first woman to free-climb the technically difficult link-up of El Capitan and the Half Dome formation in under 24 hours. But the US government shutdown may skuttle those plans.
