2:10 Mars Test - Dan Coatta: If you happened to be in the Pacific Ocean somewhere near Hawaii yesterday afternoon - you may have caught a fleeting glimpse of a gigantic balloon on its way into the upper reaches of the earth's atmosphere. It was part of an experimental flight called the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator.
One of the engineers involved in the test is Dan Coatta - a mechanical engineer with Nasa, who has been working on designing the fabric for a huge parachute which was also part of the test.

We're past the shortest day.. and heading into school holiday season...but several of our major ski fields are still yet to open. Forecasters are predicting a week of low temperatures this week and hopefully a good dump of snow - but in the meantime, mountain staff and skiiers alike just have to sit back and wait.

3:10 Feature interview - The Zhivago Affair - Peter Finn: Doctor Zhivago is sweeping Russian novel about a poet and surgeon torn between his love for two women and struggling to retain his individualism in the tumultuous period between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the Second World War. But the story of how the novel by Boris Pasternak got into the hands of Soviet citizens reads more like a spy novel. Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev had banned the book ..but enter the CIA. It covertly published Dr Zhivago, and spread it among Soviet readers as a propaganda tool during the Cold War.
The details of the CIA's involvement have just come to light in a new book called The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle of a Forbidden Book. It's written by scholar and translator of Russian literature Petra Couvee (Coo Vay) and Peter Finn, National Security editor and former Moscow bureau chief for the Washington Post.
