1.15 Seven Earth-sized Planets Discovered

NASA has just announced the discovery of seven Earth-sized planets that orbit a star other than our sun. Three of them are in what is described as the "habitable zone" where scientists say liquid water, and therefore life, could possibly exist. Planet hunter, Associate Professor Michael Albrow, is a Senior Lecturer in Astronomy at the University of Canterbury.

1:25 How the Salvinia Effect can make boats go faster

A group of Nanoscientists have discovered the Salvinia effect and say it could reduce the energy consumption of ships and make them go much faster.

Under water, salvinia, a tropical floating fern, can retain air in its hairs and remain completely dry.

Professor Thomas Schimmel from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has been working on emulating this, using forests of nano pillars applied to ships. He explains the work to Jesse.

1.35 Frog Invasion

The Carpenter family of Papamoa has been invaded by frogs. Leading their two-year-old daughter, Sophie, on a great frog hunt. Her Dad, Deon Carpenter, explains what happened. And frog expert, Professor Phil Bishop, talks all things frogs.

2:20 Shamubeel Eaqub: What if we had no dairy industry?

Imagine a New Zealand that didn’t do dairy? If we want pristine water ways, then the dairy industry would have to be severely curtailed.

So could NZ survive?

2:30 The History of bushfires in NZ

We are currently experiencing a devastating forest fire in NZ, in the Port Hills of Christchurch.

While NZ is used to natural disasters, we don't necessarily include forest fires on that list.  Some of our most well-known historical events have involved urban fires, for example, the disastrous Ballantynes fire of 1947.  We tend to associate forest fires with Australia.  Yet, NZ has had its share of forest fires, and many much larger than the current one.

Victoria University Historian Grant Morris ponders why our forest fires don't get the historical attention they deserve?
