1:15 Wild Weather for Whangamata

Severe weather, flooding and slips have all but cut off the Coromandel Peninsula. More than 1,000 homes are without power in the Coromandel and Whangamata's sewerage system is not working. The MetService says up to 200 millimeters of rain fell overnight - and another 60 to 90 millimeters of rain is expected today. Many roads in the area remain closed but State Highway 25 from Kopu to Thames has re-opened to one lane. The Fire Service have rescued three people who were stuck in a submerged car in Whitianga. There has been a major slip on Park Avenue in Whanagamata which is threatening three homes - two people have been evacuated. Thirty school children were also evacuated from a campsite and taken to the Whangamata Civil Defence Centre. Whangamata resident, Noeline Lee, has lived in the area for about thirty years and says she's never seen anything like it.

1:25 Teens, Sex and Consent

Wellington College is investigating some of its students over comments made on Facebook about taking advantage of drunk girls. It includes the comment "If you don't take advantage of a drunk girl, you're not a true Wc [Wellington College] boy". In 2014 the Ministry of Education updated its sex education guidelines for schools to include issues of consent. This followed the so called, Roast Busters case - where two Auckland men bragged about intoxicating underage girls and having sex with them. Dr Katie Fitzpatrick is from Auckland University's Education Department, and has long advocated for better sexuality education in schools and helped draft the new guidelines.

1:30 Penguin Hospital

Dr Lisa Argilla has been treating yellow eyed penguins at a temporary hospital for the past eight years during their molting season when they are vulnerable. She now would like to establish a full time wildlife clinic in the city to provide around the year care for penguins and other wild animals in the lower south island. She speaks to Jesse about raising money for the venture and where she hopes to get the funds from.

On Bookmarks this afternoon, a former fisherman turned actor and playwright whose latest work will open tonight as part of the Auckland Arts Festival at Q Theatre.  Jamie McCaskill won the Bruce Mason Award in 2013 for one of his first plays and is an accomplished composer and musician.
