1:20 Moors Serial Killer Dead

Moors murderer Ian Brady, who killed five children with Myra Hindley, died yesterday in a high-security hospital aged 79. In north-west England, the couple violently kidnapped, molested and murdered the children between July 1963 and October 1965. The children were, Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans, and were aged between 10 and 17. In 2001, Brady's book was published by American firm, Feral House. It was called The Gates of Janus: Serial Killing and Its Analysis, and was met with outcry in Britain. In the book Brady explores human violence and critiques other serial killers. The hospital where Brady was held, Ashworth Psychiatric Hospital, won an injunction to prevent the book being published in Britain, at the time. David Schmid is an English professor at the University of Buffalo in New York. He is the author of Natural Born Celebrities: Serial Killers in American Culture and The Secrets of Great Mystery and Suspense Fiction. David is in Auckland to speak at the Auckland Writers Festival and to give a talk on Brady's book, at the University of Auckland.

1:30 Engaging youth in civics

Only about 62 percent of 18-24 bothered to vote in the 2014 General Election.

A group of teenagers wants to change that. They've set up the organisation Active Citizenship Aotearoa. The group is pushing for civics to be taught in schools so that young people have an understanding of the system and the role they can play.

One of the founders of the group is Peter McKenzie who is in his first year at Victoria University.

1:40 Sound Archives: Plunket turns 110

One of our most famous institutions, Plunket, turned 110 years old this week.  "The Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children" was founded at a public meeting in Dunedin in May 1907 by Dr Truby King. It was re-named The Plunket Society after one of its early supporters, Lady Plunket, the wife of the governor-general at the time.

Sarah Johnston from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has been listening to some sound recordings from the archives about the Plunket Society and has chosen a couple to share with us.

3:10 Sloppy Science

One study says red wine is good for you, another says it's not. The public is often bewildered about medical research. Scarce funding, competition and the pressure to publish are leading to sloppy research according to Science reporter Richard Harris.

He says too often scientists are faced with terrible choices: doing what needs to be done to keep their labs running and doing what's right.

He documents the the problem in his new book, Rigor Mortis: How Sloppy Science Creates Worthless Cures, Crushes Hope, and Wastes Billions
