1:15 Sneaky male animals trick their mates

There are countless dating rules for attracting those you desire but in the animal world, deception and even disguise is used to lure in mating partners.

New research out of the University of Otago has found that some sneaky males actually pretend to be females, to avoid aggression from big rivals, and to move in on the object of their affection. 

Lead author Erica Todd has likened the cunning movements of her subject species, the bluehead wrasse, to a soap opera.

1:25 A new kind advent calendar

We're now starting the holiday season, with Christmas just weeks away and every year there's a cry that the holiday has become too commercialised. 

One church combating that with an advent calendar to bring the focus back to what they think Christmas should be about - kindness. 

The 'daily-act-of-kindness' calendar was launched last week and will run right through til December 25 and we ask Veeshayne Patuwai how people can get involved.

In Canterbury this weekend a variety of events will be taking place to mark this year as the 120^th anniversary of the birth of Rewi Alley, the New Zealander who spent over 60 years working to improve the lives of Chinese peasants and workers. Sarah Johnston from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision is here to play some recordings from the sound archives about the man who at one time was called “the most famous Westerner in China.”

2:15 Ora Lefebvre remembers being supporting act to Roy Orbison

Yesterday in our music feature we talked with Alex Orbison about his father, Roy Orbison's music and a new album out commemorating the man who sang 'Oh, Pretty Lady' and 'Crying'.

Ora Lefebvre got in touch. She says yesterday's segment brought back fond memories and one in particular.

She remembers performing as a supporting act for Roy Orbison in the late 70s in England.

2:20 Bookmarks with Michele Leggott, one of NZ's great poets

Michele Leggott is our guest for Bookmarks today.

She is one of New Zealand's leading poets and is only the second of her craft after Bill Manhire to be named as a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Michele is a national treasure: she has won the Prime Minister's Award for Poetry and the Order of Merit and she made it into a Harvard book of one hundred world poets from before Shakespeare to now.

Michele talks to Jesse about her love of audiobooks, which she has come to rely on since becoming blind. We also hear a reading of one of her poems and what she loves so much about a certain Joni Mitchell cover.

200 years ago, Mary Shelley sat with some literary friends telling ghost stories as you do late at night along the shores of Lake Geneva. Lord Byron and Percy Shelley were entranced by her story of a Dr who brought cobbled together a monster from bones and body parts and brought it to life. 

Frankenstein  has maintained a prominent place in pop culture ever since.

3:35 RNZ Eyewitness

Dave Greenberg spent 25 years of his life dangling in mid-air, but all for a good cause. 

The Wellington man had a storied career as a crewman with Life Flight, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, often being winched down into dangerous situations - a role he refers to as being the 'dope on a rope".

But it's the people he saved that Dave remembers and one rescue in particular stands out. It happened on ANZAC 2010 when an RNZAF Iroquois went missing on the Kapiti Coast.
