Short Story Club

This afternoon we will discuss  Sia Figiel's 'Freelove', which was extracted to work as a short story in the 2017 anthology Black Marks on the White Page, but is actually a part of her new novel Freelove, published last month by Little Island Press, NZ, which is a New Zealand-based community publisher and social enterprise focused on Pasifika works.

A copy of Freelove goes to the writer of the best email about the short story - Jesse@radionz.co.nz

1:15 Consciously stamping out unconscious bias

Unconscious bias can be really useful for humans, but it can also have nasty implications for people who're the victims of stereotyping, racism or sexism.

Dr Robert Wood from the University of New South Wales pops in to talk a bit about what unconscious bias actually is, and shares some tips for how people and workplaces can get past it.

1:25 Could salmon farming become the new dairy?

The king salmon industry is worth about half a billion dollars a year, but industry heads reckon it could become New Zealand's next cash cow.

But in order to do that, they say they have to move their operation from the Marlborough Sounds into Cook Strait - and that's riled up some people who question whether New Zealand really needs, or wants, intensified salmon farming right on our doorstep.

Events celebrating the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage are popping up all over the place over the next month or so.

In Hamilton, Sophie Hakaraia has helped to organise Toi Wāhine - an 11-day festival organised BY women, FOR women.

She joins us in the studio to have a chat about what it's all about.

2:10 Tech talk with Peter Griffin

Peter joins us from Seattle where he is at the Imagine Cup. Three New Zealand university teams are competing with teams from all over the world pitching innovations for a $100,000 prize funded by Microsoft.

2:20 Your Money with Mary Holm: Avoiding scams

Everybody, including the financially sophisticated - and in some cases especially the financially sophisticated - can be victims of fraud.  Mary talks about who is targeted, and the warning signs you should watch for.

She also looks at "false friends", things that give you comfort - like guarantees, testimonials and even recommendations from people you trust - that should instead make you very uncomfortable. And she gives her top rule for keeping scams at bay.

3:10 Short Story Club

Paula Morris joins us to discuss Sia Figiel's 'Freelove', which was extracted to work as a short story in the 2017 anthology Black Marks on the White Page, but is actually a part of her new novel Freelove, published last month by Little Island Press, NZ, which is a New Zealand-based community publisher and social enterprise focused on Pasifika works.
