The Dark Horse is based on a real person - Genesis Potini, a man who used chess to teach and inspire children in his home town of Gisborne. As well as being a speed chess champion, Potini lived with bipolar disorder, and was an advocate for mental health awareness.

Simon Mercep talks to writer/director James Napier Robertson, and lead actor Cliff Curtis about The Dark Horse.
