In 1973, 20-year-old Peter Robert Garrett answered an advertisement for a lead singer in an unnamed Sydney Band. The young man was living on his own having lost both parents in separate accidents over the prevous five years. Garrett immediately forged a bond with one of the band's founding members, Rob Hirst and found they shared more than music in common. Since its inception Midnight Oil has identified with environmental causes and native Australian issues.
