Ethical honey

From Afternoons, 3:10 pm on 26 August 2016

Jim McMillan is the founder of The True Honey Co.

The company is shaking things up in the honey world, and has developed TrueView technology, which provides real time data about what's happening in each hive.

Jim is at North Cape, harvesting the first of his manuka Honey for the season.

The True Honey Co. has transitioned from production only to now selling a branded product, and it recently launched at the Auckland Food show.

The product is only available online and is already finding customers in Australia and the UK.

Not all honey is created equal, Jim says.

All honey contains anti-bacterial activity, but when manuka honey is exposed to peroxide, present in our saliva and blood, it retains more of those anti-bacterial properties than other honey. Making it highly sought after throughout the world.

Misleading labelling is a problem for the industry, Jim says. Especially bulk honey which is exported and labelled offshore, where regulations about active ingredients may be less stringent, and then brought back to New Zealand.

He says consumers should look out for the amount of methylglyoxal in the honey they buy as a true guide to its quality.
