New Zealand nectarines are in the shops now, so Julie Biuso shares a recipe for nectarine and smoked fish salad – a "lovely, easy summer-day lunch".

Generally, yellow-flesh nectarines come in first and white-flesh (the sweeter ones) arrive later in summer, Julie says.

So what's the difference between nectarine and peach?

The trees look very similar, but while ripe peaches are dripping with juice, nectarines have their juice contained in the succulent flesh.

Nectarines – the yellow ones, especially – also have more tang than peaches.

Don't buy nectarines if the skin is wrinkled or the fruit is super hard, Julie says.

Also avoid those that have skin which seems to move or slip over the flesh as they're likely to be bruised.

White and yellow nectarines and white or yellow peaches can be used in Julie's salad and you can play around with adding avocado and/or prawns, she says.

"It's a lovely summer day lunch and easy to put together."
