Coronation Street to jump forward in New Zealand

From Afternoons, 1:32 pm on 10 May 2018

Huge news for New Zealand Coronation Street fans - the beloved show will jump ahead 18 months in order to bring it in line with the UK broadcast.

This will be a welcome change for those sick of having plot points spoiled on social media and people will be able to catch up with the episodes they've missed on TVNZ On Demand...but will anyone be able to catch up in time?

Danielle Moreau, a Corrie fan who had a whole blog dedicated to the show, reacts to the momentous news.

Danielle says she has mixed feelings about the jump forward as for years and years New Zealand "has been about 18 months to two years behind the UK episodes."

"I thought it's both good and bad. Good in the long term because…I use dubious strategies to watch the UK episodes myself right now. I think it's great that we'll be able to watch them on terrestrial TV in New Zealand."

The catch-up episodes will be shown for an hour each day in the middle of the day. Danielle says this is going to cause a 'dual timeline issue' for big fans of the show who, like her, are up to speed already with the UK episodes.

"It's another few hours per week, so what you'll be doing if you're a dedicated fan is you'll be watching 18 months at high speed and also watching the UK timeline at the same time for about a year until we catch up properly. It's going to be a little bit complicated you're going to have to work out who's pregnant and who's not, who's kept that secret and who hasn't."

According to Danielle a survey conducted by the New Zealand Herald said "14,000 people voted with 40 percent saying the change is a good thing, 37 percent unsure but they'll see how it goes and the rest said no, but it shows people are willing to go for this."

The only problem for Danielle is she'll now lose her ability to feed her family the spoilers, "I'm going to have to give up my status as the oracle for my family" she says, "now everyone is going to be on the same page, that's a bit sad."
