Talk the Walk: Rakiura

From Afternoons, 3:17 pm on 25 May 2018

In the latest in a series on the Great Walks of New Zealand, Richard Saunders tells us about the stunning Rakiura Track on Stewart Island.

Richard runs the Outdoor Pursuits Programme for Cromwell College and takes kids from all over New Zealand to see some of the country's best walks.

The 32km track starts about an hour's walk from the main town of Oban, crosses part of the island and comes along the edge of Paterson Inlet and back to the town, Richard says.

At the start of the track stands a sculpture of a rusted chain link, reflecting the original name of the island,  Te Punga o Te Waka a Māui or 'The Anchor Stone of Māui's Canoe'.
