Learning to read as an adult

From Afternoons, 1:23 pm on 16 April 2019

Many of us take basic abilities for granted - like being able to do our times tables, use a computer, write cogently or read easily. And we've long forgotten how challenging it may have been to acquire those skills initially.

When you DON'T have a high level of proficiency in relatively basic skills, it can be embarrassing to admit it - even though this problem affects MANY more people than you may think .

So, adult literacy groups are springing up around the country, hoping to de-stigmatize that process.

Jane Gilmour works for one of them - Literacy Waitakere, and she joins us to explain more about their work.
