Your Place - Kaitangata

From Afternoons, 1:20 pm on 11 November 2010

We are paying a short visit to Kaitangata. The origin of the town's name is not exactly clear. It may refer to a figure in Polynesian mythology, but could also allude to cannibal feasts held after tribal fighting between the local Kai Tahu and Kati Mamoe in pre-european times. Kaitangata can thus be interpreted as,"Kill a man and eat him"or"Food for the people."
