He planted his first grapes after a successful career as a broadcaster and journalist, escaping the bright lights of television and heading for Central Otago where he bought land in Gibbston Valley near Queenstown and began viticulture. Today, Central Otago Pinot Noir is famous throughout the world for its quality and countless other wine makers have turned, once marginally arable land, into vineyards.
