Refugees as Survivors – RASNZ

Syria, officially known as the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia bordered by Iraq, Turkey and Lebanon, populated by extremely diverse religious and ethnic groups. The arbitrary creation of the modern Syrian state after the first world war is arguably the reason why there’s been constant civil war since.

Due to the current crisis in Syria the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates an overwhelming two million Syrians at least may be displaced before the end of 2013, with thousands being orphaned children. What does this mean for New Zealand's refugee quota of 750 per annum? How does New Zealand compare internationally as far as refugee resettlement goes?
