AT THE MOVIES #659 – PREACHING TO THE CONVERTED

Simon Morris wonders whether audiences as well as film-makers have lost interest in surprise.  Two documentaries are clearly aimed at the fans - of the Beatles and film-maker Alfred Hitchcock.  And two more films are ear-marked for specific audiences too - for old-fashioned westerns, and the Gothic fairy-tales of Tim Burton.

Featured this week – 8 Days a Week - Ron Howard’s film of the “mania” years of the Beatles.

The Magnificent Seven proves once again that a remake of a favourite old movie is asking for trouble.   Starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.

Hitchcock/Truffaut is a documentary about the famous interview by Francois Truffaut of his favourite film-maker, Alfred Hitchcock.  Featuring clips of Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, Saboteur and many other classics.

And Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is director Tim Burton at his most Burtonesque.  Starring Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson and Asa Butterfield.
