AT THE MOVIES #724                   THE LAST STAR?

Simon Morris congratulates Dwayne Johnson – The Rock – as the last brand-name star whose presence can pretty much guarantee an audience.  He also looks at a film based on a famous (in America) children’s book, and an Australian western that, in a small way, is conquering the world.

Rampage pits The Rock against corrupt science, with the help of a genetically enhanced gorilla.  From the producers of San Andreas.

A Wrinkle in Time combines a popular American children’s book with Oprah Winfrey and the landscape around Wanaka.  Directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma).

And Sweet Country is a true story of a runaway aboriginal couple in 1920s Australia, accused of murder.  Directed by Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah) and co-starring Sam Neill and Bryan Brown.
