From Checkpoint, 5:48 pm on 19 July 2018

A New Zealand man who was abused while in state care in Australia has been told he is unable to get up to $150,000 in compensation after being deported. The man, who RNZ is only identifying as John, was 11 when he was put into an Australian state care facility and was legally made a ward of the state two years later. John says one warder stands out in his memory - initially the warder was kind, handing out cigarettes and coffee to the boys.
