The decision to evacuate Goose Bay south of Kaikoura, over fears an earthquake-caused dam above the bay could breach, is under fire from locals.

Geotech engineers informed Kaikoura Civil Defence that given the size of the dam, and forecast rain, there was a risk it could breach.

But Paul Keung, who owns the farm the stream runs through, has also been up to see the dam.

"We found a tiny slip with a tiny dam with a tiny pool and we came back to the Civil Defence team, showed them the video, and they were not interested at all and they started to mock us."

The dam is one of many, created by debris falling into a stream during nine days of earthquakes.
