Labour MP David Shearer has been confirmed in his new job of leading the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says Mr Shearer brings extensive political and humanitarian experience to the position.
The UN position means he'll leave parliament at the end of this year, forcing a by-election in Mt Albert.
