New Zealand Rugby has appointed its first ever female board member - former Black Fern Farah Palmer.

The appointment comes as the NZ Rugby battles a tarnished image following a year where players have been involved in a number of scandals.

Dr Palmer played for the Black Ferns for a decade, winning three World Cups - and outside of rugby she is a lecturer at Massey University.

Dr Palmer attended her first board meeting yesterday.
