There's no shortage of people willing to take the mickey out of American president Donald Trump, but most aren't invited to the United States to do it in front of an audience.

The Wellington comedian Alexander Sparrow has been chosen by the American comedy club chain, Laugh Factory, to join nine other impersonators to battle for the title of King of the Trumps.

The contest's being held in Los Angeles later this month (April 25) and Mr Sparrow says "it's an amazing opportunity" and he is "ecstatic" to be chosen.

Mr Sparrow says he finds Mr Trump's hand gestures and face easy to imitate, but he has had to work hard on the voice.

He says his girlfriend dyes his hair to get the look right.

"As far as I know I'm the only Trump impersonator in the world who that uses their own hair."
