Landlord group claims rent rise under Labour

From Morning Report, 7:15 am on 14 September 2017

Landlord's lobby group the Property Investors Federation says Labour's policies would force rents to go up if it became government. It comes after an email questionnaire was sent out to the group's members.

Property Investors Federation executive officer Andrew King says Labour's policies are aimed at removing rental property owners from the market and increasing their costs.

But Labour's housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says the Property Investors Federation's claim  is "politically-motivated, self-interested scaremongering".

Mr Twyford says increased supply and taxing speculators will bring rents down, but would not guarantee it. "On the contrary rents are more likely to stabilise or go down under Labour's policies," he tells Susie Ferguson.

He says increased housing supply and reining in property speculation will halt the rising rents.
