The Kererū Count is up. WWF New Zealand organised this year's Great Kererū count, in search of our native pigeon - encouraging people all over the country to register their kererū sightings.
The preservation society wants a better picture of the state of the species, where they thrive and where their favourite hangouts are.
People who spot the bird were able to either register their sightings with WWF or upload their pictures to Instagram and Twitter. WWF Head of Conservation Projects Michele Frank tells us 13,573 kererū were counted, about 1500 more than in 2016.
