Auckland less Pākehā, old attitudes slow to change

From Morning Report, 7:40 am on 4 October 2017

Auckland's population is rapidly becoming less Pākehā and more diverse - and ethnic communities say attitudes need to change with it.

The latest official projections show that within 16 years, Auckland will become the country's only region where Pākehā will no longer be the majority.

Auckland councillor Efeso Collins says there's not enough diversity within politics and leadership, with Pākehā holding 19 of Auckland's 21 council seats.

"That is hardly reflective of a city that has over 200 ethnicities, so I think there is major work to be done," Mr Collins says.

Issues like expensive housing and gentrification would continue to put pressure on ethnic communities, he says.

"If we're just pushing people out of where they could possibly live and pushing them further out into the suburbs and even outside of Auckland, we're not going to have those strong, resilient communities."
