Catalans protest police reaction to rogue referendum

As thousands take to the streets in Barcelona to protest police violence, European leaders have stayed silent as Spain's capital Madrid attempts to rein in Catalan separatists. The Catalan parliament said it would declare independence from Spain immediately if the vote was successful, but opposition parties boyotted the referendum, effectively deeming the vote illegal, in line with the view taken from Spain's central government. On Sunday, schools, universities and metro stations shut down, while dozens of roads were blocked, as civilians scuffled with armed police.
