Edgecumbe locals patrol streets after dark to stop vandals

From Morning Report, 6:17 am on 6 October 2017

Community volunteers are walking the streets of Edgecumbe each night to keep vandals from damaging the houses left empty after the floods in the Bay of Plenty town. It's been six months since the Rangitaiki River burst its banks and more than 300 homes were damaged.

The majority remain vacant with only 35 families, or just over 10 percent, able to return. RNZ reporter Tom Furley spoke to Alex Walker from the area's Māori wardens who says those vacant sites have become targets.
