After a wait of more than 30 years, motor racing fans will finally have the chance to watch a New Zealander racing in Formula One next weekend.

Twenty-seven-year-old Palmerston North racer Brendon Hartley has been drafted into the Toro Rosso team to compete in the United States Grand Prix in Texas. The last New Zealander to race in the sport's premier category was Mike Thackwell, who had a one-off drive in 1984.

Before that, the last driver to compete regularly in F1 was Chris Amon, who retired in 1976. Motorsport journalist Allan Dick tells us it's a big achievement for Hartley to get there on his own merit.
