NZ trust law 'robust' in face of Paradise Papers

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 7 November 2017

Auckland tax law expert Michael Littlewood says wouldn't be surprised if the Paradise Papers leak uncovers some illicit trust activity in New Zealand. More than 13 million documents, dubbed the Paradise Papers, have been leaked from an offshore law firm and trust company in Singapore, shedding more light on tax havens around the world. The leak comes nearly 18 months after the release of the Panama Papers, which forced changes to rules around trusts in New Zealand and saw disclosure requirements introduced. Auckland University law professor Michael Littlewood says those changes will stop New Zealand-based entities being used for illegitmate activities. But he told RNZ reporter Anusha Bradley the latest revelations come from an earlier period, before those changes, meaning there could be some illicit activity uncovered.
