Award-winning cartoonist escapes Manus Island camp

From Morning Report, 8:46 am on 20 December 2017

An award winning cartoonist detained on Manus Island has escaped Papua New Guinea with the help from the International Cities of Refuge Network. Ali Dorani, known as 'Eaten Fish', fled Iran in 2013 and was detained by Australia on Manus the following year. He arrived in an unnamed city of refuge on Saturday. The cartoons of Eaten Fish documented the harsh conditions in the Australian-run detention centre and were published widely in newspapers, including the Washington Post. RNZ's Ben Robinson Drawbridge spoke with Mr Dorani's friend - Guardian cartoonist Andrew Marlton, known as 'First Dog on the Moon'. Mr Marlton says the work of Eaten Fish reflects the brutality of Australian offshore detention.
