NZ votes against US at UN over Jerusalem

From Morning Report, 7:14 am on 22 December 2017

New Zealand is one of 128 nations who supported a UN resolution criticising the United States' decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Thirty five nations - including Australia, Fiji and Canada - abstained. Only nine nations voted against the resolution - Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo. The non-binding resolution illustrates the lingering repercussions of Donald Trump's decision, which upended decades of American policy, defied world opinion and undercut the United States' position as a potential broker of a peaceful deal in the region. Ahead of the vote, President Trump threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that went against America. Speaking to the General Assembly ahead of the vote, the United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley reiterated that. US correspondent LiLing Tan says it pips the US against the other members of the UN.
