A Māori academic says the burgeoning wealth of iwi businesses is not just increasing tribes' assets but is also increasing their wellbeing. Iwi assets are now worth an estimated $7.8 billion, with eight iwi accounting for 60 percent of that total. The figure comes from financial advisors TDB Advisory, which says Ngai Tahu has the biggest portfolio with nearly $1.7 billion dollars in assets. Manuka Henare is an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland Business School, and tells Guyon Espiner he senses Māori are looking for a new partner in terms of future business ventures. It has been the Crown in the past, but he says iwi will be increasingly looking to the private sector.
