Mother of disabled man wins full-time care payment case

From Morning Report, 6:38 am on 8 February 2018

Health officials have been ordered to reconsider how much they pay an Auckland woman to care for her severely disabled adult son. Diane Moody looks after her 51-year-old son Shane Chamberlain, who cannot care for himself or be left unsupervised. The Court of Appeal has ruled the Ministry of Health should reconsider it's decision to fund her for only 17 hours a week at the minimum wage. Mrs Moody had been seeking to be paid for 40 hours a week to care for her son. Her lawyer Paul Dale told Catherine Hutton he's been told at least 240 families are in a similar situation.
