Salvation Army gave 63,000 food parcels in 2017

The number of families going to the Salvation Army's foodbanks for help has jumped with almost 63,000 parcels handed out around the country in the past year - a 12 percent increase on the previous year.

The figure is revealed in the organisation's latest State of the Nation report and the report's author, Alan Johnson, admits it's something that's crept up on them. But he says issues around food poverty are a clear pointer to other stresses on low-income families.
