Toxic foam: New concerns about Whenuapai water safety

From Morning Report, 7:38 am on 14 March 2018

Nearly two weeks after RNZ News revealed high levels of toxic contamination in Devonport's groundwater, Auckland councillors have finally had a briefing from government officials. In that briefing they were told Auckland Council has begun identifying people around Whenuapai airbase who have water bores that may be affected by firefighting foam runoff. It was only early in March they found out what the Defence Force has known since 2016 - that parts of Devonport naval base have tested high for foam contamination. Lisa Whyte is the chair of the Upper Harbour Local Board, which covers Whenuapai. She was at yesterday's briefing. Reporter Phil Pennington asked her if Environment Ministry officials explained what new information they had about bores possibly being used for drinking water.
